    Tree peonies - a deciduous shrub native to China that deserve wider dissemination of culture through spectacular decorative leaves and fruits, large bright fragrant flowers with a slightly crimped petals. The difficulty of reproduction and slow growth, and hence the high price of seedlings of tree peonies constrain widespread these beauties in the gardens.

    Neither shrub can boast such large flowers in combination with the number and fragrance, as well as the longevity of the bush, as the tree peony. The height of these shrubs with loose profusely original crown reaches 1.5-2 meters. Tree peonies with good care grow in the same place on average about 100-150 years; known copies of the age of 300 and even 500 years old!

    Bushes tree peonies grow quite slowly; the growth of the number of flowers on the bush every year increases and reaches 30-70, and even hundreds! Flowers tree peony are bowl-shaped or bowl (there nemahrovye, semi-double and double varieties), are disclosed on the tips of the shoots in late May and bloom for two weeks, and in cool weather and longer. Fruits-flyers are densely pubescent and reach a length of 6 cm.

    Of tree peonies are most common in ornamental horticulture hybrid peony suffruticosa (P. suffruticosa) with long pinnate leaves; diameter of the brightest flowers (white, pink, lilac, red with lots of dark crimson spot at the base) is 25 cm. Among these hybrids, there are numerous dwarf varieties.

    Lemoine hybrids peony (P. lemoinei) have yellow or orange flowers with a diameter of 15 cm or more. In the original wild forms of tree peonies (peony Delaveya (P. delavayi) and yellow peony (P. lutea ludlowii)) flowers are much smaller.

    Varieties of tree peonies are divided into several groups:

    • China-EU - with heavy double flowers;

    • Japanese - with nemahrovye or semi-double flowers, light and airy;

    • Hybrids and peony yellow peony Delaveya with suffrutescent pion.

    Tree peonies prefer a bright, sheltered from the wind. Under the sunlight scattered their flowers bloom longer and more likely to retain color (less fade), but in the open sunny spot flowering bush more abundant. Soil desirable drained, well-treated, fertilized with humus and sufficiently moistened (but not stagnant groundwater), with alkaline reaction. In low-lying areas for planting tree peonies recommended device high ridges.

    The best time of planting is the period from mid-August to mid-September. Planted in early spring the bushes, having got to the growth, the danger of frost. Soil for tree peonies prepared in advance; digging pit "tapered" (diameter of the pit is twice the base). At the bottom of the landing pit poured thick drainage layer (gravel, sand, broken bricks). In the soil at planting paid 200-300 g of lime and compost on top - rotted manure.

    In the winters can occur freezing of shoots tree peony, so experts recommend preventive dry shelter of the bush for the winter wooden shields and coniferous spruce branches; young plants lightly sprinkled with dry leaves and sheltering spruce branches. Dry and damaged branches of the tree peony was removed in April.

    Tree peonies are propagated by seeds (a lengthy process), rooting cuttings in early spring, sometimes dividing the bushes or grafting. Tree peonies are very well looked in single and group plantings in the garden, especially against the background of the lawn.
